The 2021 Learning Summit on Spirituality in Education
The Fetzer Institute and the National Council for Spirituality in Education are excited to be hosting a convening on the current state of spirituality in education for educators, teacher educators, researchers, and other interested stakeholders. Rooted in the movement-building National Conference on Spirituality in Education, held in November 2019, this Learning Summit will continue to show that those who do this work are not alone. This Learning Summit also builds on last year’s webinar series, “Catalytic Education: Building the Spiritual Core in Times of Trauma,” which explored the necessity of incorporating spirituality into mental health for teachers and students during periods of considerable upheaval. Now, we seek to offer participants a sacred space where they can be informed, nurtured, and supported as we all continue to cultivate spirituality in education. The purpose of this Learning Summit is to gather those who work in the field of spirituality in education, as well as those who work in affiliated movements, to learn, grow, support, and be supported by each other.

This Learning Summit will explore both research and best practices related to supporting children’s spirituality through schools. There will be three themes of this Learning Summit:
- Informational:
Participants will learn about the most current research on the science of spirituality and its implications for children’s development and learning. Presentations on research will highlight how the last two years have shed light on the importance of understanding what matters most in children’s spaces, and how researchers are working to understand what happens in schools when the focus goes beyond teaching content. These sessions will also address what we mean by “spirituality” and how it can promote resiliency to help children to cope and thrive.

• Relational:
The Learning Summit will bring people together who make up the field of spirituality in education. Especially after a year of isolation, we want to emphasize that “you are not alone.”
Through the power of shared story and common experience, participants will create a spiritually nurturing space for each other and allow them to develop connections and networks of those who also do this work. Together, we can reclaim hope in our collective ability to heal trauma and enhance human thriving in our personal lives, our schools, and our society.

- Experiential:
The Learning Summit will provide each participant with opportunities to engage their
own spiritual core. Particularly during times of struggle, connecting with our inner lives builds resilience. Contemplative practices will be offered throughout the Learning Summit so that we can individually and collectively be grounded in the immanent and lifted by the transcendent as we engage in our work.
Overall, this Learning Summit seeks to bring together the field of spirituality in education to understand how to best meet the needs of our children and schools. We know that people are actively seeking something deeper from education and from our world. How have we been responding, and how might we best respond in the future?
