Mission:
The National Council on Spirituality in Education (NCSE) is an organization whose purpose is to advance the field of spirituality in education through collaboration, innovation, and convening.
The National Council is a meeting ground for sharing research, learning, resources and ideas related to spiritual development across the lifespan, nurturing children and adolescents in the school environment, supporting young adults on university campuses, and awakening adults in all decades of life.
We elevate awareness of the need to nurture the deep inner core of the child from the early years, provide opportunities for educators, scholars, and leaders to gather to share research and best practices, and influence public policy to ensure that spirituality, as the root of whole child education, is nurtured and supported in all people.
History:
In 2015, Dr. Lisa Miller hosted school leaders and educators at Teachers College, Columbia University for the inaugural conference on Spirituality in Education. Coming out of that first conference, the National Council on Spirituality in Education (NCSE), which convenes the field of Spirituality in Education, and the Collaborative for Spirituality in Education (CSE), which is a center for research and educator professional development at Teachers College, Columbia University, were formed. NCSE and CSE were founded on the premise that all human beings are endowed with a natural capacity for spirituality, which is supported by mounting scientific evidence that shows this universal capacity in young people provides a foundation for their emotional, cognitive, and social development. This innate capacity needs to be nurtured in order to fully blossom, and schools provide a unique opportunity to promote childrens’ spiritual growth as part of a whole child approach to education.
The goal of the National Council on Spirituality in Education is to provide a meeting ground for educators, researchers, academics, and others working in the field, which NCSE has achieved through presenting national convenings for hundreds of educators, scholars, and other interested stakeholders in 2016, 2019, and 2022.
In 2023, the National Council on Spirituality in Education formally became a membership organization, open to all who are committed to the work of supporting children and adolescent spirituality through education. Managed by the staff of The Collaborative for Spirituality in Education, NCSE remains the place to come together and share learning, research, resources, and ideas related to spiritual development of young people in schools .
NCSE will hold its fifth National Conference on October 26-27, 2024 at Teachers College, Columbia University where it will once again gather as leaders and builders of the field of Spirituality in Education.
